Petal

‘Petal’ explores intimacy through the motif of a flower. A homage to Eikoh Hosoe, the rose is traditionally an emblem of both beauty and violence as its thorns hold the potential to draw blood. In Petal, Oliver photographed his partner Michelle using light and shadow to amplify this idea of dualities existing within a whole. The floral hair and makeup design serve to synthesise her human figure with the flower itself, suggesting that, like the beauty of a rose, human intimacy requires becoming vulnerable to the possibility of pain.
